Mississippi sets strict rules for gender on driver's licences of transgender people. The law needs Governor Tate Reeves's approval.

Mississippi passed a law preventing transgender people from changing gender on driver's licences. The law passed both state chambers on 31 March. It is controversial within a broader immigration bill.

The new rule requires Mississippi driver's licences to show only birth-assigned gender. Transgender residents cannot practically change this anymore. The law allows only a few exceptions, like spelling errors or medical conditions. This restriction is hidden in a bill mainly for non-citizen identity checks.

Republican Governor Tate Reeves must still sign the bill. Reeves previously supported laws blocking gender-specific youth care and excluding transgender athletes from competitions. Democratic politicians urge him to reject the proposal. They say the licence rule has nothing to do with road safety. Senator Rod Hickman called the 'birth sex' requirement the most problematic part.

Mississippi follows other states taking similar measures regarding transgender identity documents.
