Democratic victory in Nebraska may have consequences for LGBTQ+ rights

A Democratic victory in Nebraska may paradoxically help Republicans expand their power and restrict LGBTQ+ rights.

An important congressional election in Nebraska happens next week. It concerns the district around Omaha. A Democratic victory affects House of Representatives control. It may also affect LGBTQ+ rights in the state.

Nebraska is one of two American states distributing electors per district. Therefore, the Democratic party in Omaha won one elector in 2020 and 2024. They call this the 'blue spot' in a red state. If a Democrat wins the House seat, this may change.

The problem lies in John Cavanaugh's candidacy. He currently sits in the state senate. If he wins the House seat, he must leave the state senate. Governor Jim Pillen may appoint a successor. Pillen is Republican and could appoint a Republican until 2028. This would help Republicans expand their state senate majority.

That majority is important. Republicans can then easily pass laws limiting LGBTQ+ rights. This is what LGBTQ+ advocates fear. Multiple candidates compete in the Democratic primary. Among them are businesswoman Denise Powell and Crystal Rhoades. She is a court clerk in Douglas County. The race attracts much attention and donor money.
