Canada's social media age control harms transgender people

Canada wants to require age verification on social media. This harms transgender people because facial recognition and ID requirements can out them.

Canada considers a law requiring age verification on social media platforms. This plan would greatly affect transgender people of all ages. Systems using government ID cards or facial recognition create serious problems.

For many transgender youth and adults, their official documents don't match their identity. A facial scan system could out them without permission. Some have no valid ID at all. Activists also fear data collection causes discrimination or surveillance of these groups.

Canada's parliament currently studies different versions of the law. Supporters say children need better protection from harmful content. Opponents warn privacy risks outweigh the benefits. Transgender rights groups demand input when making rules. They want age verification that is safe and inclusive, without discrimination.

The government hasn't explained how it will address these concerns. More information about the concrete plan is expected soon.
